The idea to form this quite unusual ensemble
came in a very spontaneous way we can more easily understand
when we know that all the members of the band lived, studied and
worked together for several years. After playing various duets
on streets, exhibitions and parties, they formed a quartet of
two saxes, a guitar and a trombone, later replaced by another
saxophone. In 1999, the Jazz Department of the UM Graz organised
a competition in order to pay a tribute to the great Duke
Ellington for his 100th anniversary. Igor made an arrangement of
a song “Prelude to a kiss” for four saxes and a guitar, whose
recording was selected for the CD made for this occasion. The
four saxes and a guitar seemed to work well, opening a wider
field for harmonic and rhythmic explorations that Igor knew how
to use exhaustively and not without wit, constantly surprising
and developing in different directions.
The Igor Lunder with Reeds is actively performing since 1999.
Jazz Menu is their first CD and its versatile arrangements and
particular sound will, hopefully, delight a great number of
listeners. (J. A.) |
